Step One

1. Hold the dog on a leash with about 4 feet of slack.

2. The helper carries the fake cat within visual range of the dog, but well out of leash range.

3. The tester will activate/turn on the cat, place it near the center of the room, facing the dog, and leave the area.

4. The holder should restrain the dog by the leash. Observe the dog’s interactions for 30 seconds.

Watch the dog’s body language carefully as he approaches and interacts with the cat.

Step Two

Allow the dog to approach the cat and interact with the cat for 20 seconds. If the dog is going to destroy the cat, do not allow access!

Cat test responses and scoring

Note: All responses are considered more risky with sociability scores of 5 or less.

Note: Score A for adoptable; B for increased risk of aggression; C for high risk of aggression.
